Mise-en-scene is basically what we see on the screen.
When analysing mise-en-scene we think about:
- The setting and props
- Costume, hair and make up
- Facial expression and body language
- Lighting and colour
The use of costume in the mise-en-scene creates a sense of both innocence and darkness in the character. The scene focuses on the female and this portrays a feeling of vulnerability because she is wearing a short top and shorts this makes the audience feel the vulnerability of the girl. The blue and white colours of her clothing represents sadness this can foreshadow the evil which is about to occur. If you look closely you can see that the girl's bed sheets are red which represents pain so therefore this could also be foreshadowing the events that are about to happen. The dim lighting in the scene makes the audience focus on the girl as they feel that something or someone is behind her and about to commit a bad crime. There is a major focus on the little boy in the background because he is shadowed, the audience can sense that he is an evil character. The setting gives more fear to the audience as it is set in a bedroom and there is no escape for the girl.
